AMANDA MOSTRÖM
MATRIARCH BEACH
From 12 January – 16 February 2019
Opening Friday 11 January 2019, 18h – 21h
GALERIE CHLOE SALGADO is pleased to invite you to Matriarch Beach, the first exhibition in France of AMANDA MOSTRÖM.
Following the death of a close friend and central pillar of her chosen family in London – where she moved, aged seventeen from her native Sweden – Amanda Moström started this new body of work by playfully inhabiting the role of the alpha woman.
With savage humour, Moström investigates what this role could entail and presents a surprisingly eclectic pallet of materials and works, including giant sticky date scrotums to pick and nibble at, little faux snake skin inhabited boots, bronze « alphabet » puppets, bronze smiling stools, and trapped moss balls in need of massaging.
Using a visual language derived from objects related to the domestic, play and the profane, Moström creates playful works that encourage interaction, and which can be used informally (stool, hook, puppet). The artist thus wishes to overcome the reluctance of the spectator to interact with objects simply because they are placed in an art gallery, and help him build a relationship with her works based on interaction and physical contact.
Moström hopes that this active participation with her work allows for a more profound experience.
